World Music Groups Offer Encore Concert for Haiti
Maine musical groups perform benefit concert for Konbit Sante Cap-Haitien Health Partnership marking one year after the earthquake
(South Portland, Maine) The First Congregational Church UCC on Meeting House Hill in South Portland will be the venue for an exciting April 2nd concert to benefit Maine’s Konbit Sante Cap-Haitien Health Partnership.
The 7:00 PM concert will delight adults and young alike with performances by Zemya, a popular a cappella group singing folk music from around the globe, The Maine Squeeze, an all-accordian ensemble playing eclectic ethnic music, and ImproVox, combining precise vocal arrangements with free-style improvisation and audience participation.
A year ago, as the world was still reeling from the news of the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January12th, Zemya director Deborah Gordon reached out to Konbit Sante with an offer of help, and the first world music concert to benefit Haiti was born, says Skeek Frazee, a member of Konbit Sante’s Board of Directors. “These tragic world events tend to pass so quickly,” says Zemya’s Deborah Gordon. “We want to keep Haiti in the forefront - it’s a matter of aid, humanitarianism, kindness.”

Since 2001, Konbit Sante staff and volunteers have worked in collaboration with the Haitian Ministry of Health and other partners to build local capacity in all aspects of the health system - from door-to-door community outreach programs, to strengthening community health centers, to improving care at the regional referral hospital. In Haitian Creole, a konbit is a traditional Haitian method of working together to till your friends’ fields as well as your own - working together toward a common goal. The word sante means health.
