Held Fundraiser for Haiti
"Friends and Daughters", a group of girls in Camden, held a "Hearts for Haiti" fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at the Bagel Cafe in Camden. Unique handmade cards and lovely lavendar sachets were available to purchase for Valentine's Day gifts or other occasions.
Lauren Pieri, the mother of Moira, a member of the group, explained that Friends and Daughters, started when the girls were eight years old. She said, “For us the small group format worked well as the Moms really had to be involved as organizers and we all added different skills (artist, nonprofit experience, teacher, etc). We were recently asked by the Mainely Girls group to have the girls give a little presentation at the upcoming Mainely Girls conference in Camden in April, along with other service groups. So we will be helping the girls get a presentation together. As they head to High School, they may head in separate directions, but the foundation for serving others has been prepared.”
Lauren shared that “Our group is made up of four 13 yr old girls (and a little help from their Moms) who started fundraising at age 8 when the Tsunamis hit. They have used artwork (hand dyed/painted silk scarves, sachets, and always cards, etc.) to support worthy international causes, most of these having founders from Maine (Windjammer Relief for Indonesia, Littlefield orphanage in Malowi, Safe Passage in Guatemala). Although our current recipient organization,InterVol, hails from Rochester, the commitment that our local surgeon friends have made, really inspired us to support them. Your website is a wonderful resource. Like us, I'm sure many groups are searching for an organization to send their raised funds to for Haiti relief. We actually had a hard time finding the right one immediately. I have already learned from the website about the Portland based medical group that has been in existence for several years yet I never heard of! As these girls enter high school, they may take different paths, so it is great to have your resource for any or all that wish to continue their commitment to getting Haiti off the ground again.”
At their Feb. 13 Hearts for Haiti fundraiser, Friends and Daughters earned $700. Lauren Pieri said, “We were very pleased and all three physicians stopped by and brought wonderful photos of their trip. Two of them plan to return to Haiti next month. The program they are going through is Intervol, with affiliations with Notre Dame Haiti program.”
