Haiti Solidarity Network exists to support the struggle for human rights and democracy in Haiti. Haiti Solidarity Network helps to educate the public in Maine about the history, political struggles, and community projects in Haiti. Haiti Solidarity Network works closely with existing projects in Portland, Maine, and New England, such as the Sacred Heart / St. Dominic’s Sister Parish Project in Port au Prince, the Konbit Sante Cap-Haitien Health Partnership, Peaceful Justice in Haiti and Human Rights Accompaniment in Haiti-Hurah, Inc.
Sunday, March 7 “Spirit and Song United For Haiti” for Hands and Feet Project - Haiti
The Higher Ground Singers, directed by Michelle Lessard, hosted a "Spirit and Song United for Haiti" on March 7 at Noble High School. The concert benefitted an orphanage and child amputees.
A variety of seacoast area musicians and talents were featured at this event. Helen Ksypka, "Extreme Helen," emceed the benefit, which included such local legends as Sharon Jones, Barbara London, Salt River, Rock My Soul, The Digbees, Lesley Smith & Sammie Snail, and Women Singing Out. Other performers were: Barb Whitney, Michael Tero, The Dover First Parish Praise Team and Sweet Willie D & The North Shore Gospel Ambassadors.
Donations were accepted at the door to benefit Hands and Feet Project, a children's orphanage in Jacmel, Haiti, and NEBCO Foundation – Haiti Amputee Rehab Team, a New Hampshire-based team of doctors working with New England Brace Co. to provide prosthetics to children who lost limbs as a result of last month's earthquake in Haiti.
